“Athens Court of Appeal confirms conviction of Panagiotis Adamopoulos, former General Director of the Hellenic Competition Agency.
By a judgment delivered on June 6, 2014 the Court dismissed the appeals of P. Adamopoulos and his co-defendant K. Konstantinidis, a businessman from northern Greece, and confirmed their convictions for passive bribery and attempted extortion against ΜΕΒΓΑΛ, a Greek dairy company. A sentence of 5 1/2 years was also confirmed.
Ilias Anagnostopoulos and Ioanna Maneta represented the company in lengthy trial hearings.
Back in 2006 Adamopoulos, who had previously worked with the DG Competition of the European Commission in Brussels, was conducting an investigation into alleged cartel offences in the dairy industry. During this investigation he used his co-defendant and a third person in order to demand from the CEO of ΜΕΒΓΑΛ 2,5 million € “”offering”” an acquittal through the then newly launched leniency programme of the Hellenic Competition Agency. “
