COURT OF APPEAL QUASHES CONVICTIONS IN HIGH-STAKES CASE

In a much noted judgment of 28.11.2019 the Five-Member Court of Appeal Athens quashed multi-year convictions for embezzlement and money laundering against businessmen from the energy sector totalling 236 million €.

After a lengthy trial the Court acquitted five of the eleven defendants and convicted six of them on lesser charges. It also suspended the execution of the sentences as the embezzled funds have been returned to their beneficiaries.

All defendants had received harsh sentences by the first instance court in this case which has been closely followed both by the media and politicians.

Ilias Anagnostopoulos and Jerina Zapanti represented one of the principals at the trial hearing.
